I have totally been here as a parent , and now my almost 15yo is becoming a really fantastic human! (My 11yo seems to have more of the argue with everything bone that perhaps he inherited from me ... But still overall a great kid) I practice addiction medicine and primary care and every day see parents in recovery who are far better parents than I could ever be, as well as teens still struggling with addiction who have fantastic parents (of course not all of them, but alot of them). And I see great kids whose parents are not doing so well. I'm not sure this will be terribly reassuring but ultimately, I truly believe despite all of our best intentions, we all do the best we can and in the end our kids turn out the way they do, for better or worse.

I feel this deep in my bones, Jackie. I had lots of ideas of the parent I would be, very influenced by training and then there was real life that thought that was hilarious. Lovely essay.
