Hi there. I know I don’t usually show up in your inbox on Fridays unannounced, but this is…urgent.
Earlier this year, one of our fellow sapiens emailed to ask whether Techno Sapiens might be interested in sponsoring a banner at the Reservoir High School baseball field.
After quickly Googling to ensure that Reservoir High School is a real school (confirmed: roughly 1700 students, located in Fulton, Maryland),1 and that it does, in fact, have a baseball team (confirmed: home of the Gators),2 I was in.
The combination of so many of my favorite things was simply too much to resist. Youth sports! Techno Sapiens! Random strangers connecting on the Internet!
And now, I’m happy to share this photo, which arrived in my inbox this week:
(In retrospect, I should have included a link on the banner, or maybe a single detail about Techno Sapiens, but here we are.)
Reservoir will be playing in the second round of the MPSSAA Baseball 4A State Championship tournament this Saturday, May 11.3 With a 12-8 season record, and a #5 ranking in the Howard County region, it looks like competition will be tough.
But with the support of nearly 25,000 Techno Sapiens behind them, I think we’ve got a chance.4
Go Gators!
Quick catch up for our international readers: In the U.S., most public high schools compete against other high schools in multiple sports. Fulton, Maryland is a town in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. (about an hour, it seems, from Washington, DC). Baseball is—you know what, I’ll just let you Google that.
According to Wikipedia: “The school's mascot "Gators" was selected by vote in 2001, with school colors of Orange and Blue. The logo and fight song were the same as those of the University of Florida. In 2010, a cease and desist order was issued by the University, forcing the school to create a new logo.” Nothing against University of Florida, but really? How dare you treat the Gators—our Gators—like that?
I wish I could provide you with more details about the game, rankings, their opponent, etc., but, to be honest, the MPSSAA Baseball tournament website is shockingly difficult to navigate, and I’m increasingly feeling this might not be an effective use of my time.
I will update you all with the results next week. In the meantime, please feel free to cheer on the Gators in comments.
This is hilarious.
Amazing, what a delightful story and surprise read. I live in CA but grew up playing baseball in Howard County for another high school there (before Reservoir was around!). Good luck Gators!
