I'm really curious about their use of question for social media use. How much of social media use is scrolling (down twitter, tiktok, etc.) and how much of it is "chatting or interacting with friends". I remembered you breaking down what social media use means, but I can't seem to find it now.

Such a good question -- I had the same thought! The specific focus on "interacting with friends," rather than scrolling/browsing, definitely seems like a limitation. Relatedly, it's an issue (as with all longitudinal research in this area) that the way social media sites looked in 2011 is very different from 2018 (and 2022). In 2011, the distinction between 'interacting' and 'browsing' may have been a bit less clear. I did write about this a little while ago! https://technosapiens.substack.com/p/technoresearch2

That definitely sounds right. Back in 2011 I don't remember as much focus on "doomscrolling" and the algorithmically induced radicalization. I think browsing was considered a little more fun and silly than it is today
